During devolution, all NIAO reports were examined by the Northern Ireland Assembly's Public Accounts Committee. In the absence of an Assembly - and where the Westminster Public Accounts Committee is unable to investigate - in order to ensure follow-up actions by government departments is properly monitored and public accountability is strengthened, a new procedure has been introduced whereby the relevant government department makes a written response detailing progress made since the Audit Office findings and recommendations were published. This publication contains the departmental responses to the recommendations of five NIAO reports from session 2003-04: Management of surplus land and property in the health estate (HC 298, ISBN 0102925259); Imagine Belfast (HC 826, ISBN 0102925518), Use of consultants (HC 641, ISBN 0102925356), Recoupment of drainage infrastructure costs (HC 614, ISBN 0102925348) and Introducing gas central heating in Housing Executive homes (HC 725, ISBN 0102925429).
