註釋The study of eschatology may be considered as the prerogative of an apocalyptic age. Many in the English church of the seventeenth century, both clergy and laity, believed that they had come to such a time. Their convictions, and the premisses upon which they were founded, are important to historians and theologians, and to those within the church today who sense the significance of Western Christendom's spiritual heritage. Within the context of seventeenth century eschatology, Dr. Ball examines the biblical doctrine of Christ's second coming, the interpretation of prophecy, concepts of the millennium and the kingdom of God, and "realized eschatology" as it appeared in embryo in early Quakerism. Millenarianism and its more radical extension in the Fifth Monarchy movement are set against this wider background. The effect of eschatological hope on the life and witness of the church and on the pursuit of holiness in the life of the individual believer provide an appropriate conclusion. Belief in an imminent second advent, as Dr. G. F. Nutall remarks in the Preface, "must always have far-reaching implications when held deeply and by more than a few people." While A Great Expectation is primarily an examination of second advent doctrine and its implications during the seventeenth century, it will also have something to say to those who may feel that a similar tide is flowing today.
