Ecology and Society
註釋Martell writes to introduce students of sociology and politics to concepts of and trends in ecology; but he also goes well beyond simply presenting green ideas and reviewing relevant literature--although he includes essentials of both. He argues that ecology should have greater influence on social and political thinking, and he suggests courses of action to bring about a better resolution of the problematic cause/effect relation between expansion of industrial society and deterioration of the environment. Most readers will agree with the contention that greater attention to ecology is necessary in order to retain an environment that can support decent standards of human, animal, and plant life. Not all will agree with Martell's solutions, primarily of a political nature, although they are well reasoned and thought provoking. Practitioners and students in many fields will find insights into the impact of ecology; students of business and industry, for instance, in Martell's evaluation of ecologically responsible consumerism. For a broad readership of all those who have concerns related to the environment. -- Choice.
