註釋
The first thing you notice, before you even get to the Iditarod start on Anchorage's 4th Avenue, is the barking. With hundreds of excited, energetic dogs in one area, the barking is to be expected. Once you get to the staging area around 4th Avenue, you sense the lively blend of the crowd's excitement mingling with that of the dogs. It's a thrilling mixture. The Iditarod offers paradoxes. It's world famous, like the Indy 500 or the Kentucky Derby. But the ceremonial start in Anchorage suggests the cozy feel of a minor-league baseball game - like "Bull Durham" with snow and many barking dogs. The race itself is extremely challenging; more people have summited Mt Everest than have completed its grueling course with brutal terrain and weather. But it's one of very few sports in which women have long competed against men as equals. The 2015 Iditarod provided another paradox. The sled dog race is generally associated with Alaska's cold and harsh winter weather. But in 2015 it was so warm snow had to be trucked in for the ceremonial start in Anchorage. This was an extreme example of the effects the rising warmth from climate change has been having on the race. Due to increasingly undependable snow conditions, in 2008 the official start location was moved 40 miles north from Wasilla to Willow. For those who can't make the early March trip to Anchorage, Mushers In The Slush offers photographic vignettes of the ceremonial start and insights into some of the paradoxes of the Iditarod. It's up to you to imagine the barking.
