Multiple Verb Constructions in Korean
註釋The primary goal of this study is to identify the underlying structure of serial verb constructions (SVCs) in Korean. In order to achieve this goal, the exposition focuses on identifying the factors that regulate the occurrence of more than one verb in a single clause by looking at the way events are expressed and configured in Korean syntax. Chapter one introduces the phenomenon of SVCs and provides an overview of various theoretical analyses of SVCs. Chapter two distinguishes two types of SVCs in Korean that are the focus of this thesis: clauses consisting of two lexical verbs (SVC); and clauses consisting of one lexical verb and a second aspectual verb (AVVC - a subtype of auxiliary verb construction, or AVC). Chapter three investigates semantics of the AVVC. I claim that AVVCs express lexical aspect such as accomplishment and activity, and that lexical verbs in Korean are underspecified for (a)telicity, which is determined by the V2. This chapter also addresses multiple occurrences of aspectual V2 in a single clause, and proposes that V2s provide temporal measurements of V 1 's input event. Chapter four presents the structure of AVVCs. I propose that (i) a VP consists of both argument structure and event structure, which form separate syntactic domains; (ii) each domain is structured hierarchically. Chapter five proposes the underlying structure of SVCs, resulting from the findings concerning AVVCs. I propose that (i) SVCs form an adjunction structure: the first verb adjoins to the second, because the first verb is not event-bound to V2, unlike the second; (ii) the 'shared' arguments in SVCs are copies left by A-movement of an NP from one 'theta-position' to another. In the latter part of this chapter, a possible link between verb alternation and SVC phenomena is suggested.
