Papers of Sir George Gilbert Scott, 1839-1878
註釋ScGGS/2/4 Two letters by Scott to Herbert Williams (1812-1872, architect & surveyor), 16 Feb 1858, & 28 Nov 1861 (holographs, signed); on work at St Michael Cornhill [which Scott remodelled between 1856 and 1861] in collaboration first with Mason [William Andrew Mason, d.1864] and then with Williams, adding a new porch in Gothic style, giving the windows Venetian tracery, replacing most of the Wren furnishings and adding polychrome decoration to the walls; in the first letter Scott complains of the high-handed manner in which the committee had dismissed Mason and substituted Williams without his knowledge and attributes their behaviour to the "obstinacy of the sculptor" [John Birnie Philip]; in the second letter Scott sends Williams a cheque for {OCLCbr#9C}230 out of the payment he had received for the work at the church. (Accession: 157).
