"Wifredo Lam: Magical Surrealism" accompanies an exhibition of the same name that will open at the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in September 2014 and will travel to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta in February 2015. Born in Cuba to parents of Chinese, Spanish, and African descent, WifredoLam was rooted in four continents. Previousstudies of Lam s oeuvre have focused on his European associations, assuming that artisticand literary movements inFrance and Italymost profoundly affected his work." Magical Surrealism "will highlightthe artist s heretofore-underappreciated Spanish influences, demonstrating their presence inseveral of Lam s greatestmasterpieces. With paintings represented from all of the artist s main periods, the exhibition will reveal how Lam s style evolved from a lexicon of hybridity reflected in a revolution of ideas and forms to illustrate the metamorphosis of imagery and iconography that comes to define his signature painting style. Scholars and curators Elizabeth T. Goizueta, Roberto Goizueta, Claude Cernuschi, Roberto Cobas, and Ernesto Menendez-Conde use the paintings and graphic works in the exhibition to inform their original research on the seminal surrealist artist Wifredo Lam.
