註釋
This report examines the possibility of observing synchrotron emission from auroral electrons. The necessary energies and densities of such particles are estimated using the computational techniques presented in a previous report. In order to establish the validity of these techniques, the results obtained for the case of emission following the nuclear test on 9 July 1962 are first briefly reviewed. Although direct measurements of high-energy auroral electrons during severe disturbances are not available for comparison, the estimates indicate that the synchrotron mechanism offers a probable explanation for past observations of vhf auroral noise at mid-latitude stations. An experimental program is outlined which could provide information on the mechanism of auroral noise generation and the relationships between auroral noise events and other geophysical phenomena. The experimental data could also provade a means of studying the densities and energy spectrums of the high-energy auroral electrons. (Author).
