A Christmas Hamper
註釋"A Christmas Hamper" presents six seasonal tales written by Mark Lemon for various publications, and first published as a collection in 1860. "Mark Lemon's Christmas stories may be taken as the key to his generous, self-denying, and loving nature. They are simple, unpretentious contributions to the literature of fiction, full of tender, gentle feeling, teeming with sympathy for artists, overflowing with a genuine and honest love for the drama and its surroundings, and abounding with sympathy for 'the fatherless children and widows, and all that are desolate and oppressed.' Mark Lemon entered heart and soul into the festivities of Christmas, and among his children was a child himself in the presence of the holly and the mistletoe. In many a Christmas cartoon, in many a genial, merry, honest face intended to represent 'Father Christmas,' may be traced the lineaments of Mark Lemon's well-known features."- Joseph Hatton, "London Society." 1871.Mark Lemon (1809-1870) is perhaps best known for editing "Punch, or the London Charivari" from 1843 until his death in 1870. Under his leadership, the magazine -- featuring humor, satirical pieces, and comic illustrations -- achieved significant popular success in Victorian-era Britain. Lemon was a prolific writer, and authored many dramatic works, novels, poems, songs, and fairy tales, as well as numerous articles for newspapers, periodicals, and, of course, "Punch."
