The First Winter Trip Through Yellowstone National Park
註釋An account of the expedition led by Lt. Frederick Schwatka during the winter of 1886-1887 written Jack Ellis Haynes. Haynes? father, F. Jay Haynes, accompanied Schwatka?s expedition as a photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Notably, the winter of 1886-87 was extremely harsh, and while Schwatka had experience with Artic expeditions, he was unprepared to take on Yellowstone in the winter. Setting out from the Mammoth Hot Springs, Schwatka is unable to continue and turns back once they reach the Norris Hotel. Haynes gathers three members of the party and travels to the Upper Geyser Basin and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Haynes? party gets stuck in a severe blizzard when traveling around Mt. Washburn and almost perish, but ultimately make it back to Mammoth safe. Haynes publishes his photos in a printed leaflet, making him one of the first people to publish photos of Yellowstone in the winter.
