Notes and Inventories of Lathes, Tools, Etc
註釋A collection of notes, inventories, and drawings of tools, especially concerning the rose engine lathe, owned by Captain Alfred Edward Hay Marescaux, R.N., written and executed in exacting detail by Marescaux. The larger of the two inventories, Inventory of lathes, tools, etc. in the workshop of Captain A.E.H. Marescaux, seems to be a combination inventory, sketchbook, and commomplace book. In addition to an inventory of tools, illustrated by Marescaux or by paper cut-outs from catalogs, the volume also includes sketches of various projects; typewritten notes; a Times obituary of friend and fellow amateur machinist, Major-General J.B. Forster, dated 17 June 1938; a detailed diagram of Marescaux's workshop at the Villa Nicole; and a homey, typewritten newsletter entitled, Refugee, dated 1st July 1940 and lists H.T. Dunera and Naomi Jacob as editors. The second inventory volume serves as an index to the first inventory. The final volume is devoted to Marescaux's rose engine lathe and accompanying tools, which he states was made for the Earl of Sefton circa 1820 by Holtzapffel & Deyerlain. Clearly a labor of love, Marescaux's illustrations exhibit a high degree of technical skill, far exceeding that of an amateur enthusiast.
