註釋Documents the slow emancipation of the Jews in Nassau between 1806-66. Even the first step towards equality, the abolition of the special toll for Jews, came about only in 1806, much later than in neighboring counties. The granting of civil rights was contingent on the Jews abandoning their "petty dealings" and peddling, and integrating economically as well as culturally into German society. The first attempts to reform the status of the Jews, between 1816-19, were not successful due partly to the authorities' fear of kindling popular antisemitism. In the 1820s-30s the ducal administration made some efforts to reeducate the Jews, but this was done mainly through restrictions on their ways of earning a livelihood, and led to increasing poverty. A second reform initiative, in 1841, also failed for the most part, but fiscal equality was introduced. The revolution of 1848, accompanied at first by anti-Jewish excesses in Nassau, did, however, bring the Jews equal political rights, and in 1861 the "Judeneide" was abolished. Nevertheless, Jews continued to be barred from judicial and administrative civil service.
