註釋Problems of access, selection and transition to higher education are widely recognised in Australia today as priority areas for policy review. This is the report of an internal evaluative study funded by the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission with a view to its relevance to other institutions. The major part of the report consists of findings from field observations of central administration, selection committees and faculty office procedures as selection decisions were actually made over two years. Issues and problems are identified and discussed in detail in relation to general policy and administrative considerations. A brief review and technical appendix includes information of a statistical nature on the prediction of success in university courses. Strategies for change are discussed in relation to a general review of admissions policy, including the introduction of a special admissions scheme and the possible use of achievement tests. University policy documents are included in the appendix. Although some of the problems at the University of Melbourne relate to the intense competition for entry to this particular university, many of the issues addressed and solutions proposed deal with common problems and will suggest policy options and procedures of interest to other universities and colleges, and to individuals concerned with questions of educational quality and social equity.
