The globalization of the Old World began thousands of years ago, in particular through the exchange of goods, but also with the migration of invisible travelers such as diseases that spread from Asia to Africa and Europe. From the 15th century onwards, globalization continued with the spread of Europeans across the world and the development of a worldwide transportation system. This expansion was accompanied by the exchange of plants, animals and microbes between the Old World and America, Australia and the Asia Pacific region. This development was characterized by continuous conflicts between intellectual, spiritual and economic powers striving for local or global hegemony, and by the always unanswered question of who would win struggle and for how long. In order to identify the desire for power and the potential for destruction in hegemonic states and to understand the resentments of less powerful ethnicities, cultures and economic systems resulting from suffering and hatred, fundamental knowledge of the deep historical dimensions of any regional or global disposition is required. Only by taking this aspect into account is it possible to keep striving for a humane future of the world and to assess possible hindrances along the way. By means of this descriptive chronological time chart, Eberhard Schmitt provides an indispensable tool for the understanding of global history.

Die Globalisierung der Alten Welt beginnt vor Jahrtausenden vor allem mit dem Austausch von Gutern, aber auch mit der Wanderung von unsichtbaren Reisenden wie Seuchen von Asien nach Afrika und Europa. Ab dem 15. Jahrhundert setzt sich die Globalisierung mit der Ausbreitung der Europaer uber die Erde und der Entstehung eines Weltverkehrssystems fort. Diese Ausbreitung ist begleitet vom Austausch von Pflanzen, Tieren und Mikroben zwischen der Alten Welt und Amerika und Australien/Ozeanien. Charakteristisch ist dabei, dass sich geistige, religiose und wirtschaftliche Machte im Bemuhen um regionale oder globale Vorherrschaft unaufhorlich aneinander reiben und offen ist, welche Macht das Kraftemessen fur sich entscheidet und fur wie lange. Um den Machtwillen und die Zerstorungspotentiale von Hegemonialkraften sowie die aus Leid und Hass resultierenden Ressentiments unterlegener Ethnien, Kulturen und Wirtschaftsweisen zu erkennen, bedarf es grundlegender Kenntnisse der historischen Tiefendimension jeder regionalen oder globalen Disposition. Nur unter Berucksichtigung dieser Dimension kann an einer menschenwurdigen Zukunft der Erde gearbeitet und konnen Widerstande eingeschatzt werden.
