The Naked Streets
註釋This is the story of a group of teenagers living in an impoverished quarter of Florence, a first person account by one, Valerio, who has the soul of a poet. There is Valerio who in 1932, when he begins to tell his story, is fifteen years old and wears shorts. His heart beats for Luciana, but it is difficult to tell her. Then there are Giorgio, good and brave, Maria, who will risk losing him for carelessness, Marisa and Carlo, who will have much to be forgiven for, Olga, beautiful and docile, Arrigo and finally Gino, with his black lump in his heart. They are young and poor, but born and raised in Santa Croce, Florence. "We knew nothing -- says Valerio -- perhaps we didn't want to know. We promised each other honest joys. Our life was the streets and squares of the Quarter." But reality, that alien city with its beautiful cafes and little orchestras, will not be content to stay outside and watch for long. It will burst into their lives with the arrogance of the regime, of wars, of poverty. It will destroy their homes, scatter them around the world, call them to arms, to prison, to political struggle. But it will never be able to rob them of the most precious legacy of the Quarter, that uncontrollable faith in man and in the value of solidarity.
