註釋
The determinants of participation of children in school need to be studied in order to design policies to achieve a country's educational goals. Although characteristics of the educational system have been shown to significantly affect the educational behavior of children and their families, the evidence also indicates that individual and family characteristics are important as well. The results of the analyses discussed in this paper indicate an important effect of parental educational aspirations on children's participation in school and to a lesser extent the years of school attended of those who have participated. Access to school in rural areas acts through aspirations and has direct effects as well on participation in school, but not in years of school attended. The results are also of interest for what they do not show. In particular, except for income from family business in urban areas, the effects of economic variables on educational aspirations and participation are not generally significant. In addition, while parents have lower aspirations for their daughters than their sons, the role of parental aspirations in affecting behavior does not show systematic differences between male and female children.
