註釋
A growing body of research indicates that those who care for terminally ill family members report a range of experiences from emotional burden and physical fatigue to enhanced meaning of relationships. More negative experiences contribute to caregiver anxiety and burden and, at times, to the caregiver's physical decline. Stage IV colon cancer is an advanced form of the disease; treatment for the patient is palliative and life expectancy is short. Caregivers not only face new responsibilities, but the trajectory of the disease causes fear of the unknown and the decline and demise of the care recipient. Reported caregiver interventions address coping strategies, informational needs, and ways to manage the recipient's pain. However, none offer a comprehensive program for the caregiver. The proposed psychoeducational program offers caregivers information to increase their understanding of the disease process, the physical and emotional impact of caregiving, coping strategies, self-care, building support from others, bereavement, preparations for death, and healing and rebuilding.
