註釋A collection of essays written in Poland in the interwar period and in the U.S. after the Second World War, some dealing with antisemitism. "Staszic a Żydzi" ["Staszic and the Jews"] (pp. 49-56) was written in 1926 on the 100th anniversary of the death of Stanisław Staszic, an important figure in the Polish enlightenment period. Comments on his antisemitism. "Z dziejów 'kozubalca' (na marginesie dwu dokumentów rękopiśmiennych)" ["From the History of 'Kozubalec' (in the Margin of Two Manuscripts)"] (pp. 61-68) comments on the giving of money or gifts (kozubalec = schillergeld in Yiddish) to students of non-Jewish religious academies in Poland by Jewish communities so that the Jews living near the academies would not be beaten or robbed. Describes such cases in Lvov and Przemyśl in the 18th century. Pt. 2 (pp. 131-202) deals with attempts to rescue European Jews during World War II with the help of Polish diplomatic circles in the U.S. Describes his own role (Lewin was then in New York) and that of Polish Consul Sylwin Strakacz in the activities of the Vaad ha-Hatzalah in New York. Deals, as well, with the efforts of Jean-Marie Musy in Switzerland to rescue Jews from Theresienstadt. 45 pp. of documents are appended.
