This study was conducted to determine whether conventional secondary biological treatment detoxifies sulphite pulp mill effluents. Seven sulphite pulp mills, varying in pulping base, wood species, type of treatment and recovery system and geographical location were studied. All mills were located in the United States and practiced some form of chemical recovery and biological treatment (aerated lagoons or activated sludge). Samples of mill effluents before and after biological treatment were collected four times over six months. Standard 96-hour static bioassays using rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) determined the LC50 value of each sample. Acute lethality was defined by a compliance standard of LC50=100%. Other routine analyses such as pH, biochemical and chemical oxygen demand, ammonia and total suspended solids were also conducted.
