註釋Describes the career of von Gerlach, editor of a series of important liberal periodicals in Germany between 1896-1933. Pp. 26-37, "Redakteur an Stöckers 'Volk'", deals with his early antisemitism under the influence of Adolf Stöcker, his articles against the corruption of Germany by Jewish wealth and the Jewish press, and his enthusiastic reception by the antisemitic movement. Pp. 47-50, "Abkehr vom Antisemitismus aus 'Zeit-Gründen'", relate his conversion to militant rejection of antisemitism in the late 1890s as editor of "Die Zeit", initially in order to conform with the liberal policy of the publisher, Friedrich Naumann, but later, after encountering Jews who did not correspond to his stereotypes, out of conviction. In the 1920s he defended the Republic and promoted pacifism. Compelled to flee in 1933, he worked in Paris to aid refugees, mostly Jews, and attempted to arouse world opinion against Nazism.
