Ancient Landscapes, Pastoral Visions
註釋This book examines the legacy of Samuel Palmer, who in the 1800s turned his back on the city and retreated to Shoreham, Kent, with a band of 'brothers' known as the Ancients. They sought to capture the essence of the English countryside, which led to the idealisation of rural life. In the 1920s Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland rediscovered the work of Samuel Palmer. Against a contemporary background of globalisation and environmental concerns, the search for England continues in the work of the Brotherhood of Ruralists; even in 21st century, the passtoral tradition still offers us the comfort, albeit tinged with the sadness of loss, of Little England.
