註釋This monograph surveys the morphology and function of eyes of a variety of fishes, including lampreys, sharks, and bony fishes. The author draws upon a vast literature to discuss the construction of the fish eye, the way in which images are focused on the retina, and the response of the retina to these images. Consideration is given to development, movement of eyes, vascular supply, retinomotor activity, intraocular filters, and tapeta lucida. Anatomical descriptions are accompanied by functional interpretations made in the light of current research. The book concludes with surveys of visual characteristics and abilities, such as visual fields, resolving power, and sensitivity threshold, and adaptations to the photoenvironment as shown by visual pigments and changes occurring in the eyes of migratory fishes.
