The flow sheet for the recovery of gold from an ore consists of several unit operations, of which a high percentage are based upon electrochemical principles. The unit operations are discussed in this paper to illustrate the diverse role played by electrochemistry in the overall recovery process. The discussion is based upon the results of recent research carried out at the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek).
