註釋William Gillespie was born ca. 1720, probably in Northern Ireland. He lived with his wife Mary in that part of Augusta County which is now part of Alleghany County, Virginia, as early as 1746. He and his family moved to Washington (now Smyth) County ca. 1780. About 1783 he and Mary moved to Pickens County, South Carolina. He died about 1802. The second Gillespie line descends from Robert Gillespie who was born ca. 1730 in Northern Ireland. He lived with his family as early as 1754 in Augusta (now Alleghany) County. In 1772 he and his family moved near the present site of Clifton Forge, Virginia. His will was probated in 1798.
