Ecological aspects of thick coal mining

註釋A joint US-Yugoslav project on "Thick coal seam mining", based on Velenje lignite mine experience, was finished in the year 1991. Since that time in Velenje lignite mine some new, very good results were achieved regarding productivity. This was possible with intensive application of computerized collection and analysis of data as well as respective modelling. Mining method, which previously was divided into so called horizontal and vertical concentration, is no more limited by height with only respect to the isolation of stope against water bearing sand formation above coal deposit. Besides productivity more and more importance is given to the ecological aspects of mining, which can be very harmfull to the environment. Many of adverse impacts can be minimized or even suppresed by changes and improvements of mining technology, which is the topic of this project.
