註釋Environmental education has been at the centre of international and national policies of sustainable development for the last several decades, and has stimulated significant debate regarding its inclusion in curricula and proposed methods for its implementation. Research in education has given critical attention to diverse theories and practices of environmental education, but has tended to take a narrow focus on activities within schools, classrooms or specific projects. In contrast, this research uses anthropological methods and understandings of the socially-embedded nature of education to consider perspectives on environmental education within the wider frame of a community. Specifically, the research examines the roles of the state, schools, and local organisations in the implementation of environmental education programming in the community of Monteverde, Costa Rica, an internationally recognised site for forest conservation, scientific research and ecotourism. More broadly, the research explores the interactions between local actors and ideas, and discourses and policies of environmental education in national and international contexts.
