The Unforgiven
註釋"The Unforgiven" by Alan Le May is an epic American novel that explores the destructive power of a vicious rumor. The story revolves around the Zachary family, who are cattle ranchers in Texas. After the patriarch, Old Zack, is killed while driving cattle to market, the family is left to carry on with three sons, a wife, and an adopted daughter named Rachel. A man named Abe Kelsey, who has been driven to madness by the loss of his son to Kiowa Indians, blames the Zacharys for not trading Rachel, whom he believes has Kiowa heritage, for his son. Abe relentlessly follows the Zachary family wherever they settle, spreading false accusations about Rachel and turning their neighbors against them. Through persistent efforts, Abe convinces the Kiowa Indians that Rachel is the sister of one of their warriors, putting pressure on the Zacharys to return her so she can be taken as a squaw by another warrior. This ordeal tears the family apart and tests their loyalty and resilience.
