Werner Scholem
註釋Traces the life of German Jewish communist Werner Scholem (1895-1940), the older brother of Gershom Scholem. Ch. 7 (pp. 363-447), "Triumph der Barbarei (1933-1940)", describes Scholem's arrest by the Nazis in 1933; the dispersion of his family; Scholem and his wife Emmy as literary figures in the writings of Arkadij Maslow, Franz Jung, and Alexander Kluge; his trial before the People's Court in 1935; his internment in Plötzensee, Lichtenburg, and Dachau; and his deportation to Buchenwald, where he was killed in a quarry in 1940.
