An investigation was conducted to determine causes for failure of the acrylic window in the access tube of the bathyscaph TRIESTE and recommend corrective measures. The causes were determined to be severe local stressing caused by drilling of bolt holes; mounting stresses; augmenting of these factors by aging and thermal expansion coefficient differentials; and hydrostatic compression stresses during submersion. Design suggestions are made for reducing or eliminating these conditions. (Author).
