The Iconography of Hindu Tantric Deities
註釋This is the first of a two-volume monograph on the iconography of Hindu deities as presented in Tantric texts. It focuses on the iconography of 108 deities described in the sixteenth-century North Indian Mantramahodadhi by Mahīdhara. The Mantramahodadhi is a compendium in 25 chapters and 3344 verses that addresses topics related to Tantra, specifically mantraśāstra. Due to its clear and well-structured presentation and the broad range of topics covered, the Mantramahodadhi continues to enjoy considerable popularity all over India.

Part One consists of a detailed introduction, which places the work within the context of texts on mantraśāstra and addresses topics such as the function and structure of the deity descriptions (dhyāna) and the interpretations given to the iconographic attributes.

Part Two presents the 108 deity descriptions extracted from the Mantramahodadhi. Each entry includes the Sanskrit text of the passages in transliteration, a literal translation, and a note on the distribution of the iconographic attributes and explanatory notes on the deities.

The volume includes line-drawings of the deities from the Teluga edition of the Mantramahodadhi, published in 1908, and other illustrations corresponding to the deity descriptions in the text.

The print edition is available as a set of two volumes (9789069801193).
