He reports that "Benjamin Clements says he will see that you get his oil of opaldeldoch [i.e. Opodeldoc, a medical plaster or liniment] intended as an applicative for your back. Sarah observed that the Spirits of Turpintine [sic] had no effect, and you will read directions attached to this medicine before applying. I think you ought to try and keep trying every medicine supposed to be good, do not despair or give up ..."
