There are 25 million vets in the U.S. & 5 million vets who receive care within VHA. Suicide rates in men between the ages of 20 & 65 are approximately 20 per 100,000 persons per year, VHA mental health officials estimate 1,000 suicides per year among vets receiving care within VHA & as many as 5,000 per year among all living vets. This report reviews studies on suicide in the general population. Also briefly summarizes relevant findings & types of recommendations from related reports addressing prevention of suicide.
