In Japan, most orchards are located on sloping land. Citrus orchards, in particular, are often established on steep slopes. In such areas, soil conservation practices such as mulching and the planting of grass cover are widely used to control erosion during the rainy season. In addition, engineering measures such as the construction of ditches are becoming extremely important. In constructing ditches, the intervals between the ditches are mainly decided by experience. The effectiveness of ditches in controlling erosion, and the optimum spacing and layout of ditches, should be studied. Furthermore, since ditches have steeply sloping sides, erosion control along the sides of ditches is significant. The Bulletin discusses techniques of slopeland conservation used in Japan, and the results of studies on their relative effectiveness.
