註釋
Interprets the concept of uniqueness of the Shoah. Argues that the debate on this issue was connected to internal debates within the American Jewish community and was extended to the European controversy in the "Historikerstreit". Considers the dilemma of the historian, who is expected to be objective, and the inevitable subjectivity which arises when studying the Shoah. Dwells on the obstacles faced by educators who teach in multiethnic institutions, where overemphasis on uniqueness might be misinterpreted by students as denigration of the suffering of other persecuted peoples. Delineates four criteria for defining the uniqueness of the Shoah: its bureaucratic and industrial nature; its dehumanization of Jews; its goal to murder the Jews and eliminate their culture; and its plan to erase the Jewish impact on other cultures. Concludes that greater emphasis on these criteria by teachers could enrich the discussion by including both the specific and universal message of the Shoah.
