Apollonius Nettelbeck is too shy to speak to the young Christiane, with whom he has fallen in love, and so he asks his daring brother Fritz to speak to Christiane on his behalf. This leads to the marriage between Fritz and Christiane and to a bitter enmity between the two brothers, which ultimately culminates spectacularly with a life-and-death encounter on a church tower - between heaven and earth.
