A Comparison of Certain Baroque and Modern Italian Songs
註釋Since there is a need for literature dealing with styles of Western Music in the writer's native language--Chinese, he decided to make some contribution in the field of vocal music, approached from the point of view of a performer, with the intention of translating the work into Chinese. Therefore, two recitals were presented as part of the program work leading to the doctoral degree. On February 28, 1963, one recital was presented, consisting of works by Vaughan Williams, Poulenc, Tcherepnin, Casella, Bartok, Ives and Barber--Twentieth Century composers of different nationalities. The other recital on July 9, 1963, consisted of two songs by Dowland and four solo cantatas by Purcell, A. Scarlatti, Rameau, and J.S. Bach--composers of the Baroque period. All solo cantatas were presented with harpsichord and violoncello as accompaniment. It was the hope of the writer, through the experience of performang these works, that he might gain insights into the compositions, their vocal techniques, interpretations and composers' intent. This thesis is basic to the research done before and after the recitals, and deals mainly with the melodic structural elements found in the Italian songs of the Baroque and Twentieth Century eras. The structural elements of these songs were compared in order to make an analysis of the similarities and differences inherent therein.
