註釋Organized Jewish musical activity in Nazi Germany developed because of the prohibition of Jewish performers from appearing before the general public. In Saxony, new Jewish ensembles formed, at first, under the auspices of the religious communities, the only Jewish organizations permitted to function by the Saxon authorities; only with the formation in 1935 of the Reichsverband der jüdischen Kulturbünde, under the supervision of Hans Hinkel, did Saxony also consent to autonomous Jewish Kulturbünde as they existed elsewhere in the Reich. Hinkel protected the Kulturbünde as his fiefdom, but imposed restrictions: Aryans were not allowed to attend or participate in performances; music by composers like Beethoven, who expressed the German soul, could not be performed by Jews. Nevertheless, Jewish musical life flourished, not only in the big cities (Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz), but also in the smaller towns - an affirmation of the German Jews' identification with German and European culture. Includes many facsimiles of documents, concert programs, and calendars of performances.
