The proposed account of the decline of interrogative pronominal inversion relies crucially on a split-CP approach to the left periphery of Romance interrogatives and the reanalysis of the phrase est-ce que. Originally part of a WH-cleft question, est-ce que was reanalyzed as a question marker, due (at least in part) to the syntactic ambiguity of the pronoun ce. It is argued that, as a result, the evidence for a fully-layered interrogative CP field was reduced in the input of acquirers. The reanalyzed, truncated CP layer cannot generate pronominal inversion, but it has given rise instead to innovative interrogative structures which maintain SV order. The two different interrogative CPs are in competition, in the sense of Kroch (1989), but the evidence for the full CP has been reduced such that its loss, nearly complete in spoken colloquial French, seems inevitable in written French.
