註釋
A selective work that documents the formative impact of the region's earlier history, this is the first work of its kind to include within its purview not only older, more familiar countries of Eastern Europe like Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland, but relative newcomers as well, such as the Baltic states and the successors of Yugoslavia. The first section of the bibliography, General Works of East European History, presents core bibliographies for geographical regions of Eastern Europe and for each nation state. Included are reference aides and bibliographies, general and descriptive histories of the land, peoples, and economies, and works depicting intellectual and cultural life in these areas. A second section, the Subject Bibliography, then provides citations for an array of subjects of central importance to East European history, arranged alphabetically. The subjects treated here are multifarious, ranging from broad concepts to specific events and personages. Such an arrangement of topics, bypassing vexed questions of nationality, is particularly appropriate to the history of countries of this region, where interrelationships are strong and where current national borders reflect only in part the multifaceted past. The contents of this bibliography herald the transition of Eastern Europe from the Cold War to a period of rapid, portentous change. This will be a welcome addition to any specialized collection and to many general libraries.
