註釋
Sir George Buchanan (1854-1924) entered diplomatic service in 1876, initially serving in Tokyo, and subsequently in various European capitals. He is best remembered as British Ambassador in Russia from 1910 to the downfall of the Romanov dynasty seven years later during the First World War. He was thus in a unique position to witness the last years of the imperial court, and the roles of the kindly but weak Tsar Nicholas II, 'a lovable man, possessed of many good qualities, a true and loyal ally, having, in spite of all appearances to the contrary, his country's true interests at heart'; the resolute but obstinate Tsarina Alexandra, 'a good woman, actuated by the best of motives, [but] instrumental in bringing about the final catastrophe'; and the disastrous influence of the moujik Grigori Rasputin. His memoirs were published in two volumes in 1923, a year before his death, and appear here complete and unabridged in one volume.
