Forest Soil and Water Research Program
註釋This report presents a five-year research strategy for MNR's Forest Research and Development Section's Forest Soil and Water Research Program (FSWRP). Included are the program's goals, research priorities, policy links, transfer plans, staffing needs, and partnerships. The FSWRP contributes to MNR's policy support using three major research themes: (1) riparian zone management, (2) silviculture and soils, and (3) climate change; all areas that the program has been addressing since 2002 and in which knowledge uncertainty is high. Planned 2006-2011 research efforts will continue to reduce uncertainties, specifically in relation to soil carbon and water cycling. Also, partnerships will be refined to address emerging issues such as peatland management (under the climate change theme) as well as parameterize and validate a series of process-based carbon, nutrient, and water models to improve understanding of how soil carbon and water interactions affect forest and aquatic productivity to develop a measurable indicator for sustainable forest management. This five-year strategy is based on a synthesis of the results of a workshop titled 'Integrating OMNR research priorities and climate change: soil and water resources' held February 15-16, 2005 in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as new policy directions introduced since that workshop.
