註釋
The idea that beginning teachers require a structured system to support their entry into the profession has moved from the fringes of the policy landscape to the center. It is now generally recognized as a critical component of a comprehensive approach to teacher development and is mandated in many states. A number of ways are offered in this book in which schools, teacher associations, institutions of higher education, educational collaboratives, and state departments of education can support teachers with the right mentoring program at the right time. Part 1 discusses aspects of teacher induction, such as how to address their needs and support learning, and how to design and maintain programs for beginning teachers. Part 2 surveys models of mentoring and inducting new teachers, including programs funded by school system, district, region, and state; peer assistance and review programs; substantial grant-funded programs; and alternatively funded programs. In part 3, implications for induction are discussed, and a 20-step procedure for developing a successful mentoring program is presented. Finally, appendices contain charts, questions, mentor configuration charts, and suggestions useful for organizing a mentoring program. (Contains 96 references.) (RT)
