The U.S. Government auctions uninhabited Spencer Island, located 460 miles off the California coast. There are two bidders: William W. Kolderup, a wealthy San Franciscan, and his arch-rival J. R. Taskinar, of Stockton, California. Kolderup wins four million dollars. Taskinar mutters, "I will be avenged!"Godfrey, an idle 22-year-old, lives with Kolderup, his uncle, and Kolderup's adopted god-daughter, Phina, whom Godfrey loves. Prior to marrying Phina, Godfrey undertakes a sea voyage around the world, accompanied by his mentor Professor T. Artelett a.k.a. "Tartlet."After time at sea, Godfrey is awakened one night and told to abandon ship. Jumping into the sea, he is washed ashore on a deserted island, where he finds Tartlet also marooned. Eventually, they are joined by Carefinotu, rescued from Polynesians visiting the island.
