註釋
Despite the monumental importance attributed to controversial 20th century experimentalist Stanley Milgram's "obedience" research, 21st century social psychologists remain divided about its meaning. Although commentators agree that better understanding of participants' viewpoints is essential in explaining Milgram's findings, we know surprisingly little about what the hundreds of research subjects actually did and said in the experiments. This dissertation introduces ethnomethodology and conversation analysis as methodological innovations enabling substantive progress in interpreting behavior from participants' viewpoints. Using a large collection of crucial but hitherto neglected archived audio recordings, I show "just how" Milgramesque behavior arose in a three-party context of social interaction, one which posed a stark dilemma for participants as they took patterned routes towards "obedient" or "defiant" outcomes. Overall I find that, although resistance was widespread in both groups, effective "defiant" resistive practices differed from ineffective "obedient" ones in frequency, form, and sequential placement. I conclude with an assessment of the limitations of Milgram's experimental design, and of Milgram's relevance to better understanding the Holocaust
