註釋[V.12.] General Ulysses S. Grant, in an attempt to sieze the Confederate port of Vicksburg, Mississippi, was thwarted in a series of attacks. But in April 1863 he successfully landed his forces south of Vicksburg and pushed inland, fighting battles at Port Gibson, Jackson and Champion's Hill before closing in on Vicksburg and laying siege to the Confederacy's vital river bastion.
