註釋Examines ritual and theological aspects of the events which resulted in the trial of Menahem Mendel Beilis in Kiev in 1911-13. Argues that the Orthodox Christian version of the ritual murder accusation was different from the Catholic one. The first Orthodox blood libel text, which set a paradigm for later blood libels in Russia, was the book written by a Romanian converted Jew, Neofit, sometime in the late 18th-early 19th centuries, translated into Russian in 1803 and known as "The Book by the Monk Neofit". This Orthodox Christian paradigm regarded the ritual murder of Christians by Jews as a continuation of the Temple sacrifices, and Christian blood as necessary for ritual purification of the members of the rabbinical class. A large sector of the Russian educated class, deeply affected by mysticism, believed in the libel. Focuses on the argument between supporters and opponents of the ritual murder accusation at the Beilis trial, in particular on the expert opinion by Ivan Sikorskii, a Kiev psychiatrist and an eminent racial theorist. Dwells on Vasilii Rozanov's writings during the trial in support of the prosecution. Argues that Rozanov's antisemitic views were influenced by those of Pavel Florenskii. Florenskii, whose own ideas bordered on racism and early fascism, was a co-author of Rozanov's "Olfactory and Tactile Attitude of the Jews towards Blood" (1914) and of many of the latter's anti-Jewish articles. The Beilis affair was reflected in the writings of Russian futurists.
