William G.B. Morris Papers
註釋The William G.B. Morris papers include original diaries kept by Morris during the American Civil War and photocopies of the diaries. The first volume (23 June-30 September 1863) recounts his service in the Great Valley, his capture at Cumberland Gap, and his imprisonment at Johnson's Island. The second volume continues his internment on Lake Erie (26 July-2 September 1864) and the third volume (12 June-1 December 1865) traces his release, his return to his home at Mountain Page, North Carolina, via Baltimore and Petersburg, and his experiences as a school teacher. The last diary refers briefly to events in North Carolina during Reconstruction, including marauding by Yankees and the local vote for William Holden and other candidates. Part of the first volume also contains data on his students and includes a brief diary, apparently kept by someone else, of a Confederate prisoner's transfer from Camp Douglas to New Orleans (4-11 May 1865). The collection also includes a photograph of a gentleman that is possibly Morris.
