Management of Water Demand in Africa and the Middle East
註釋The introduction to this collection of commissioned papers provides background on the nature and scope of water demand management (WDM) as a field of study. The first four chapters consist of executive summaries of papers identifying WDM research activities and institutions in North Africa and the Middle East; Western and Central Africa; Eastern Africa; and Southern Africa. To integrate the results from these studies, an overview paper commissioned with the further goal of recommending next steps is summarized in chapter 5. Chapter 6 introduces the concept of gender-based analysis for development projects. Summaries of two papers (one for North Africa and the Middle East and one for sub-Saharan Africa) discussing social issues, particularly as related to gender, stemming from the application of specific WDM options appear as chapters 7 and 8. The appendix includes a description of the International Development Research Centre's program initiative supporting further research on people, land, and water in Africa and the Middle East.
