註釋
The introduction to this collection of commissioned papers provides background on the nature and scope of water demand management (WDM) as a field of study. The first four chapters consist of executive summaries of papers identifying WDM research activities and institutions in North Africa and the Middle East; Western and Central Africa; Eastern Africa; and Southern Africa. To integrate the results from these studies, an overview paper commissioned with the further goal of recommending next steps is summarized in chapter 5. Chapter 6 introduces the concept of gender-based analysis for development projects. Summaries of two papers (one for North Africa and the Middle East and one for sub-Saharan Africa) discussing social issues, particularly as related to gender, stemming from the application of specific WDM options appear as chapters 7 and 8. The appendix includes a description of the International Development Research Centre's program initiative supporting further research on people, land, and water in Africa and the Middle East.
