The objectives of the study were (1) to record sounds produced by certain marine fishes; (2) to analyze the recordings for acoustic features characteristic of different species; (3) to investigate the mechanisms by which fishes produce sounds; (4) to determine the behavioral significance of fish sounds; (5) to determine the sensitivity of fish to sounds of different frequencies; (6) to investigate the parameters of sounds to which fish can respond; (7) to examine, by psychophysical means, the mechanisms of sound reception in fishes.
