註釋In the face of racist onslaughts, antislavery gained a voice during the course of the 1780s and 1790s. The debate over slavery irrepressibly emerged when political tempers flared. In an expanding public sphere, New Yorkers sought to identify who should participate in governing an independent republic. Racially-coded stereotypes did damage, but an imaginative literature asserted the potential of African Americans to speak competently as citizens, thus advancing the antislavery cause. Moreover, as a means of determining the presence or absence of justice, racial bondage intruded on critical public discussions of economic development, nation building, and social reform.
